THE COFFEE DIET
In the 18th century, a Swedish scientist named Carl Linnaeus reportedly created a taxonomy of plants and included coffee as a “dietary plant.” While coffee can suppress appetite temporarily, it’s unlikely to be an effective diet plan!
THE WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE COFFEE
Kopi Luwak, also known as civet coffee, is one of the world’s most expensive coffees. It’s made from beans that have been eaten and excreted by civets, a type of small mammal. The unique fermentation process supposedly gives it a distinct flavor.
A CAFFEINATED MISTAKE
In 1600, Pope Clement VIII was asked to ban coffee by religious advisors, but he decided to taste it first. Legend has it that he enjoyed it so much that he declared, “This devil’s drink is so delicious…we should cheat the devil by baptizing it!” Thus, coffee received the papal approval.
COFFEE AND THE SIZE OF CUPS
The size of coffee cups has grown significantly over the years. In the 1950s, the standard coffee cup was about 6 ounces. Today, it’s common to find cups that hold 12, 16, or even 20 ounces of coffee. Coffee lovers can now enjoy “bucket-sized” servings!
